Selling Books
Sorry, it’s that time of year again. Due to taxes and a slow April, Second Chances will not be making appointments to buy books for May 2024. We hope to replenish the budget by June 1st, so please give us a call then. Thank you for your patience!

How do I make an appointment?
Please call on the first of the month. I usually schedule only a dozen appointments per month, at which point potential sellers are asked to try again on the first of the following month. Appointments are set up for Tuesdays through Saturdays between the hours of noon and 4 p.m., and the calendar fills up quickly. Most years, my final month for scheduling appointments is October.
There will be months when the store will need to close the buying desk, so please bear with me.
Can I just walk in to sell my books?
Sorry, no. I only take books by appointment. Small budget, alas.
What kind of books are you looking for?
All kinds! Art, architecture, photography, gardening, history, science & nature, travel & adventure, cars & trains, spirituality, metaphysics, philosophy, biography, children’s & young adult, general fiction, mysteries, science fiction & fantasy, romance, horror, westerns.
What kind of books do you NOT want?
No stained, torn, or soiled books. No highlighting or underlining.
No recent hardcover fiction once it's released in paperback. I'll still take classics, though!
No dated materials (e.g., travel guides, old health or self-help books).
No Reader’s Digest Condensed, Advance Reader’s Copies, DVDs, audiobooks, textbooks, computer manuals, or magazines.
How much can I bring?
Two boxes per appointment unless you've arranged with me ahead of time to bring more. Please be prepared to take back the books I can't use.
How much do you pay?
Book values have been affected by online markets, so there's no set percentage. I pay according to what price I plan to put on the book. The average percentage for most paperbacks is 15% of the cover price in cash or 25% in trade credit. Trade credit pays for books you purchase from Second Chances.
